Last week was all about learning how to teach yourself visual effects art skills. It occurred to me over the weekend that there was still one little detail that I’d skipped. I told you how to teach yourself new skills, but I never explained what you should teach yourself. There are so many resources at Gnomon School of Visual Effects that some artists wouldn’t even know where to begin!

1. Free Tutorials

Are you curious about visual effects, but you don’t know if you want to spend the time and money to become a professional? Look no further than Gnomon’s free tutorials! All you have to do is sign up to become a member of the site (which doesn’t cost you a penny), and you’ll gain access to online tutorials on Adobe Photoshop and 3DS Max.

These tutorials will give you a good idea of the quality and care that goes into each Gnomon product.

2. Gnomon DVDs

Without a doubt, Gnomon DVDs are among the best resources available for any young artist who hoping to teach themselves visual effects. Some of the DVDs are very specific, such as Efficient Cinematic Lighting and Creating Trees in Maya. For this reason, it’s important that you spend a lot of time figuring out which DVDs are right for you. Are you a beginner who needs art skill 101 DVDs, such as Introduction to Maya or Stereoscopic Camera Fundamentals? Or are you a skilled artist who needs something a bit more in-depth?

The key to using DVDs effectively is to avoid treating it like a classroom. In fact, this is one of the biggest advantages of teaching yourself a skill. In a classroom environment, you have to furiously take down notes because you only have once chance to learn everything. With a DVD, however, you can go back and watch it as many times as you want. So, don’t expect to watch a DVD once and learn everything you need to know. You’ll need to pause it, practice techniques, rewatch old footage, and give each DVD the time and dedication they require.

Strapped for cash at the moment? Don’t sweat it — join the Gnomon forums and enter a few art contests. Winners get free art DVDs! And don’t worry: even amateur artists have a decent chance at winning. The judges place high value on artists who show promise and creativity, even if their technical skills are lacking.

3. Forums

Ah, what a beautiful segue! Forums are an excellent resource for aspiring artists, and Gnomon’s forum is no different. Brainstorm with fellow artists about creative inspiration and advanced techniques. Plus, one of the greatest things about joining Gnomon’s forum is that it will be easy to find other artists who have used the same educational material as you. Did watching a DVD leave you confused about a certain issue? Don’t sweat it — your peers on the forum will be more than happy to help you understand some of the more complicated concepts.
