Founder/President/Board of Directors
Alex is the Founder and President of the Gnomon in Hollywood, as well as the Gnomon Workshop, the Gnomon Gallery, Sketchtheatre and Gnomon Studios. After attending the Art Center College of Design and University of Pennsylvania, Alex worked as an Applications Engineer for Alias|Wavefront. Alex has since dedicated the last seventeen years to educating students and professional artists around the world. He has been published in industry magazines, websites and books in addition to teaching classes at several major trade conferences as well as on the Gnomon campus.
Alex continues to work on personal and professional projects, including creating over thirty instructional DVDís, and working on block-buster films as a creature development artist such as James Cameron's Avatar, JJ Abramís Star Trek, Green Lantern, Super 8 and Prometheus, among others.
Vice President/Board of Directors/Director of Education
Darrin has worked as the chief administrative officer of the Gnomon School of Visual Effects since 1997. He is an alumnus of the Art Center College of Design where he studied transportation and industrial design. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Product Design, Darrin was employed as an applications engineer for Alias|Wavefront where he received numerous awards including Outstanding Technical Support.
Darrin began his teaching career at Art Center College of Design while simultaneously working as an independent artist/consultant with entertainment companies such as Warner Bros., Honda, Sega and MCA/Universal. Darrin continues to teach his craft at Gnomon as well as creating multiple DVDs.
Patricia comes to Gnomon with over fifteen years of secondary and postsecondary educational experience. She holds a Bachelor of Art in English Literature and a secondary teaching credential from California State University, Los Angeles and a Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certificate from University of San Diego. She previously taught Communication at Art Center College of Design, and Language Arts at Eagle Rock High School in Los Angeles.
As School Director, Patricia ensures the school is functioning efficiently, aligned with Gnomonís Mission and in accordance with state and accrediting standards. She oversees and supports all offices confirming that student services, operations, education and technology are appropriate and meeting the needs of students, staff and faculty. Her expansive background in accreditation, curriculum development, program planning and classroom instruction, in both secondary and postsecondary schools, has continually enhanced Gnomon's pedagogical philosophies and provided structure and organization to the school.
Director of Administrative Operations
As Gnomonís Director of Administrative Operations, Brian oversees Gnomonís administrative departments and works closely with team leaders to ensure operations are running efficiently and in continual support of Gnomonís Mission. Brian is involved with the development and implementation of administrative policies and processes and the strategic planning of multiple administrative offices. He also serves as a student advisor, where he lends his experience as both a multi-department director and an alumnus of Gnomon.
Prior to joining Gnomon, Brian studied illustration and general studies at Orange Coast College. He began his career in education administration at Gnomon in 2005 and has since had many different roles and responsibilities, which have culminated in an in-depth understanding of administrative operations, as well as the processes and regulations of accreditation.
Clark has worked at Gnomon since 2010 in multiple capacities moving from intern to front desk to admissions assistant to admissions advisor. As admission advisor, Clark meets with prospective students, advises them of their educational options and acts as the point-of-contact throughout their tenure at Gnomon. His multi-faceted experience at Gnomon gives Clark a keen insight so he may properly assess the needs and goals of each student and determine which path best suits their individual goals.
Clark holds a Bachelor of Arts in Animation from California State Northridge, coaches youth teams on fundamental through advanced game-play, and continues to take part in professional development that allows him to further develop his skills as an effective advisor and artist.
Hannah graduated from Laguna College of Art + Design in 2010 with a Bachelor of Art in Illustration. She is a practicing illustrator and graphic designer, showing paintings in galleries across California and working with a wide range of clients on a variety of projects, from designing murals and textiles to logos and posters. She has worked at Gnomon since 2014, bringing with her three years of recruitment and admissions advising experience, and specializes in working with students to help them identify and pursue pathways to further their education and, ultimately, their career goals.
Enrollment Services Specialist
Alida earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Masters of Fine Art in Sculpture at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. She has over five years of non-profit arts and academic administrative experience, having worked as a program leader, a registrar, a teacher and an office administrator at various institutions focusing on art education.
During her tenure at Gnomon, Alida has been a vital component of the admissions team advising prospective students and reviewing prospective student portfolios demonstrating her proficiency as an administrator and consistently supporting Gnomonís Mission. As Enrollment Services Specialist, Alida oversees the admissions application process and assists students with the transition into Gnomon with the same motivation and integrity she has become known. Alida continues to take part in professional development that allows her to further develop her skills as an effective administrator and specialist, as well as expand her knowledge of industry-specific material via training at Gnomon. She has taught art and implemented programs for a number of non-profit organizations, is a practicing visual artist, and continues to show work in the US and abroad.
Kevin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Drawing and Digital Photography from Georgetown University. He previously worked at Georgetown University's Office of International Programs preparing students for studying abroad. As Admissions Coordinator, Kevin processes prospective students incoming applications to ensure the integrity of the database, maintains internal efficiency reports, and provides support for applicants during their admissions process.
Director of Compliance and Financial Aid
As Director of Compliance and Financial Aid, Michelle directs the financial aid office through development, implementation and maintenance of comprehensive financial aid services for students. She ensures that Gnomon is in compliance with applicable Department of Education regulations, state licensing and national accreditation requirements. She is responsible for management of the Student Records Coordinator and the Financial Aid Officer.
Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science in Information Science from Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri. She joined Gnomon in 2007 with 10 years of experience in proprietary vocational school administration, accreditation, immigration and Title IV approval. Her experience includes a broad understanding of program and record keeping requirements, higher education processes and operational practices. In strict compliance with Gnomonís Mission, she serves as advisor to Gnomon on regulatory policies, practices and issues.
Associate Director of Financial Aid
As Associate Director of Financial Aid, Chris Freeman brings 15 years experience in both federal and state financial aid as well as two years as a Compliance Auditor, reviewing policies and procedures for over 40 schools around the country. He supports the Financial Aid office at Gnomon in multiple facets, including directing his passion advising students as they plan their academic and future career goals in the entertainment industries.
Chris has an extensive background in the entertainment business gleaned from both his educational pursuits as well as his lifelong practice as a musician. Chris graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia College-Hollywood, with a Bachelorís Degree in Film/TV editing. He has made several short films, documentaries and music videos, and has played bass in bands for four decades, most notably in the punk band Pansy Division. His award-winning documentary on Pansy Division premiered in London in 2008 and screened at over 30 film festivals around the world.
Financial Aid Officer
As Financial Aid Officer, Nick works directly with all students and families helping them clarify Federal Financial Aid eligibility and financial planning to support them achieve their future career objectives.
Nick earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and Studio Arts from the John Herron School of Art at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He joined Gnomon in 2012 with 3 years of experience working Visual Effects studios such as Stereo D, Rhythm & Hues and DreamWorks Animation. Nick uses his own college experiences and his personal understanding of the industry to convey all the important details of the Financial Aid process to Gnomonís student body.
Nick is a member of the California Association of Financial Aid Administrators and continues to participate in Federal aid training and activities to help him better serve students. Nick continues to expand his artistic skills by taking classes at Gnomon and is pursuing a graduate certificate in College Counseling at UCLA.
Director of Placement and Alumni Relations
As Gnomonís Director of Placement and Alumni Relations, she is responsible for the cultivation and expansion of Gnomonís industry and alumni network, and works closely with employers to facilitate employment for Gnomon graduates and alumni. She maintains a large network of professional contacts that have contributed greatly to her unparalleled success with job placement on Gnomonís campus. Additionally, Shannon serves as an advisor to students and lends her industry experience to a variety of student service activities in support of Gnomonís Mission.
Shannon holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from the University of Denver and has taken postgraduate classes at both Loyola Marymount University and the Academy of Art in San Francisco. With 15 years of experience in the entertainment industry, including a decade as a visual effects artist on over 30 feature films, Shannon is an experienced team leader, having supervised departments at multiple companies.
As Gnomonís Registration Specialist, Paulli is responsible for all aspects of student registration, actively maintaining student records, and assisting with quarterly scheduling of classes. As Gnomonís Principal Designated School Official (PDSO), she serves as the primary point of contact for all international students certifying compliance with Homeland Security mandates. Paulli works directly with both staff and students to ensure that our registration procedures run efficiently while simultaneously providing skilled customer service to Gnomonís students.
Paulli has been with Gnomon since 2010 and has since had many different roles and responsibilities, which have culminated in a comprehensive understanding of administrative pipelines, as well as the processes imbedded in student enrollment. She is pursuing her Bachelors of Arts.
As Gnomonís Bursar, Mark works closely with the controllers and Records Office to refine Gnomon's billing procedures, oversee the student store and contribute to the maintenance of the financial side of student billing. Mark supervises the Bursarís Assistant/Store Associate.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Art in computing in the arts from University of California, San Diego. He worked as an Accounting Assistant and Accounts Coordinator at various businesses for seven years before arriving at Gnomon. He has demonstrated professionalism and acute attention to detail in his role in accounting and has successfully grown his position over the last three years at Gnomon, providing stellar billing and customer service in support of Gnomonís Mission.
Bursar's Assistant/Store Manager
Beginning as an intern in January 2012, Amanda supported multiple departments including admissions, outreach, and event coordination before joining the Gnomon staff full time. As Bursarís Assistant/Store Manager, Amanda keeps Gnomonís student store running smoothly and also assists the Bursar with registration and billing procedures.
In 2008, Amanda earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in Animation from Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. She brings to Gnomon multiple yearsí experience as a freelance animation and design artist, retail associate, and customer service representative. Amanda has attended several Gnomon courses to both hone her craft and gain insight into student academic purchasing needs to support all educational requirements.
Event & Social Media Coordinator/Office Manager
As Gnomon's Event and Social Media Coordinator/Office Manager, Crystal ensures that the schoolís daily operations run smoothly and events are organized and planned to perfection. She is integral to the execution of a myriad of Gnomonís events such as the Making Ofís, Figure Drawing Workshops, User Group Meetings, Open House and Gnomon Gallery. In addition, Crystal plans activities for Gnomon students that foster well-being and community such as Movie Screenings, Wellness Talks, and Video Game Tournaments.
To help promote Gnomon students, graduates, and the school as a whole, Crystal crafts social media posts and blogs on outlets such as Facebook and Twitter. As Office Manager she is the primary interface between the facility and staff for any service related needs. Crystal graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Animation from the Southwest University of Visual Arts. Prior to coming to Gnomon, she worked for Nickelodeon as a post production assistant on projects such as iCarly and Victorious.
Student Records Coordinator
Amelia earned a Bachelor of Art in Language, Culture, & Society with a minor in Applied Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. As Gnomonís Records Coordinator, Amelia is responsible for maintaining student records, verifying graduation requirements, facilitating requests for academic documents, and ensuring all student records and data are in compliance with all federal, state, and agency regulations. Ameliaís past work experience with customer service and office administration helps her provide the best service possible for Gnomon students, staff, and faculty.
Brittany has been Gnomonís receptionist since 2013, and serves visitors by greeting, welcoming, and directing them appropriately, while maintaining all aspects of the front desk and telecommunications system. She greets guests and students with enthusiasm and sees that their experience at Gnomon is both positive and informational. Brittany brings to Gnomon multiple years of customer service and contributes widely to a team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Brittany is currently attending courses at Los Angeles City College and working toward a degree in Textiles and Marketing.
As Gnomonís receptionist, Lindzee Meltzer greets guests with the utmost enthusiasm, provides a welcoming environment, and directs students and visitors appropriately, all the while maintaining all aspects of the front desk and telecommunications system. She brings to Gnomon multiple years of customer service experience as a retail associate, and has a holistic understanding of the creative culture from her experience as a freelance makeup artist, pastry decorator and designer, and a pottery painting instructor. Working within a ceramic studio has provided Lindzee a broad understanding of prospective student needs. Lindzee is currently attending professional development activities that focus on customer service, communication, and office etiquette.
Art Director/Creative Advertising
As Art Director, Eric oversees visual design, information architecture, technical implementation and maintenance/review of Gnomonís website. Additionally, Eric creates websites for school events and produces marketing materials, signage and event announcements. He teaches and wrote the curriculum for Gnomonís graphic design course, including lecture delivery, grading, design critiques and assignment creation.
Eric attended Vincennes University pursuing a degree in Visual Communication, after which he worked at TaigMarks Inc., an advertising agency, where he produced an array of web and print designs. His career at Gnomon began in 2008 when he redesigned Gnomonís website and he has since been responsible for all visual design associated with the school, maintaining a consistent visual style and executing all public and administrative materials.
Danielle studied art and graphic design from the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with emphasis in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History. As Gnomon's Designer, she assists in the visual design for Gnomon's print and web advertising as well as the maintenance of the school's website.
Director of Educational Administration
As the Director of Educational Administration, Andrea supports Gnomonís faculty through implementing professional development and performance evaluations to improve classroom management and overall communication. Her vast understanding of academic best practices ensures Gnomon's education department is continuously enhanced and aligned with the school's institutional mission. Andrea also provides mentorship to the student body, a skill honed through over a decade of art and design school instruction in multiple disciplines on the Gnomon campus and other post-secondary schools.
Andrea is a graduate, with honors, of both Art Center College of Design and Wellesley College, where she earned double majored, bachelors degees in Illustration and Entertainment Design, and Studio Art/Art History, respectively. Andrea is currently pursuing a MFA candidacy in Creative Writing at the University of Southern Maine.
CTO/Director of Distance Education
As Chief Technology Officer, Miller is responsible for the long term, strategic design and management of Gnomonís technology infrastructure, support and standards. His responsibilities as Director of Distance Education are focused on the oversight of curricula, academic practices and technology development within Gnomonís distance education model. Additionally, Miller is responsible for the management and supervision of all technology department staff.
Miller earned an Associate of Arts degree in Fine Art from Diablo Valley College, studied fine art and 3D animation and design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and holds a certificate from Gnomon. His years of experience in the information technology field, both in the corporate and entertainment arenas, combined with his artistic background and industry experience, ensures that Gnomonís distance education model, and the technology division as a whole, remains innovative and aligned with Gnomonís Mission. For over nine years, Miller has helped contribute to the development of Gnomonís information technology infrastructure, including creating staff and student resources and establishing Gnomonís Technology Department.
Associate Director Education/Technology Research and Development
As the Associate Director of Education/Technology Research & Development, Max is responsible for the research and analysis of a variety of technologies utilized within the entertainment arts arena, along with the development of internal training processes and procedures in support of all technology initiatives affecting Education Department. He also identifies and procures top industry professionals as qualified instructors for Gnomon.
Max has several years of professional industry experience and has been teaching at Gnomon since 2010. His background ensures that the documentation and training required for Gnomonís technology initiatives is delivered using the same high standards as our educational curriculum. Max is a graduate of Gnomon's certificate program and studied at Ivy Tech and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Associate Director Education
As the Associate Director of Education, Kyle is mainly responsible for developing and executing curriculum for Gnomon's newly formed Games Track. Kyle is part of the Academic Mentoring Team where he uses his broad range of skills to ensure that students from all tracks receive the support needed to be successful in the industries Gnomon serves. Kyle is also responsible for researching and integrating cutting-edge software, tools and techniques for the advancement of existing curriculum.
Kyle earned a Bachelor of Art in Illustration from the University of Hartfod in 2006, and furthered his education at Gnomon as a graduate of its Certificate Program in 2008. Kyle has worked in the game industry as a Lead Environment Artist where he corroborated on several games titles including Sorcery, Borderlands 2 and The Evil Within. Additionally, Kyle has experience in the film industry as a generalist where he modeled props and digital doubles for feature films, as well as in toy-production as an action figure sculptor. Kyle has several years of instructional experience at Gnomon where he wrote and taught Introduction to UDK, Introduction to Unreal 4, and Environment for Games. He maintains a strong online community presence through forums and social media where he promotes an awareness of upcoming tools, trends and methods.
Education Administrative Coordinator
As the Education Administrative Coordinator, Misty aids the Director of Education, the Director of Educational Administration and the Education Department in supporting instructors, students and staff while maintaining Gnomon's accreditation standards. Additionally, she oversees the Lab Monitor/TA pipeline, maintains documentation related to the Education Department, schedules appointments for students for the Academic Mentoring Center, and assists high school students during Gnomon's High School Summer Camp.
Misty has been working in an administrative capacity for Gnomon since 2010. Early 2015, she will receive her bachelorís degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a major in Cultural Anthropology. Some of her academic pursuits abroad include studying Anthropology and English at the University of Oxford, England, as well as studying History and Art in Paris, France.
Director of Systems Administration
As the System Administrator, Anthony is responsible for Gnomonís network, hardware, software and IT infrastructure. He also oversees the administration and support of all operating systems and software on Gnomon networks. His management duties include the oversight of Gnomonís systems engineers.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles. As a former software engineer, Anthony has over 10 years of experience with electronics, programming and engineering and has applied this knowledge to become a valuable member and contributor to the success of Gnomon. For over six years, Anthony has demonstrated effective leadership skills and has supported Gnomonís Mission by developing and maintaining an exemplary example of IT resources and support to students and staff.
Learning Resource Coordinator/Systems Engineer
As Gnomonís fulltime Learning Resource Coordinator/Systems Engineer, Tom ensures the learning resource system includes materials commensurate with the level of education provided and appropriate to meet the educational objectives of Gnomonís programs.
He responsible for managing our school library, library inventory and assisting Gnomonís staff, students and instructors in their orientation, training, and use of the learning resource system. Tom also maintains student attendance records, prints and copies instructional materials, maintains and troubleshoots student software and hardware on a daily basis, and installs software at the end of each term. Tom received an Animation Certificate from Gnomon in 2008, and uses his past academic experience to aid students in their studies.
TA Coordinator/Systems Engineer
Skot began his career at Gnomon in 2012 and has since had many different roles and responsibilities, which have culminated in an in-depth understanding of both Gnomonís educational philosophy and technological infrastructure. As TA Coordinator/System Engineer, Skot is responsible for the selection, hiring and coordination of Gnomonís teaching assistant team. His responsibilities as System Engineer include the maintenance of student attendance records, delivery of instruction materials, and troubleshooting instructor or student software and hardware issues.
While completing a Digital Production for Entertainment Certificate at Gnomon, Skot began working as a laboratory monitor and then laboratory technician. He brings to the job 15 years of management and supervisory experience in art-related industries and a certificate in Comic Book Illustration from The Kubert School. Skot practices his craft via freelance work in 3D modeling/graphic design for multiple companies.
After completing a Bachelor of Art in Fine Art and Computer Science from Washington State University, Charley continued his education at Gnomon, earning a certificate in 2005. He has over a decade of experience building computers and troubleshooting hardware, as well as a creative background, including extensive skills with image compositing.
As a former student, he is well equipped to assist students and faculty with software concepts and lend perspective on course material. His responsibilities as System Engineer include the maintenance of student attendance records, delivery of instructional materials, and troubleshooting instructor or student software and hardware concerns.
John earned a Bachelor of Art in Art from California State Los Angeles before completing Gnomonís certificate program in 2008. He brings to his position years of experience in both art and technology, in particular an understanding of 3D software and animation. His responsibilities as System Engineer include the maintenance of student attendance records, delivery of instructional materials, and troubleshooting instructor or student software and hardware concerns. He continues to take classes at Gnomon to stay current with emerging technologies.
His years of experience in technology, both in the academic and entertainment realm, combined with his Gnomon academic familiarity, ensures both students and instructors alike are well-served.
Director of Industry Relations
Bourbeau is unrivaled in the extent and variety of his industry contacts. He has been instrumental in connecting Gnomonís students with prospective employers and cultivating Gnomonís role within the industry. He teaches career-related courses, including Interview and Resume Workshop, and conducts a variety of industry outreach events.
Bourbeau has been with the Gnomon Workshop since 2005, where he has created curricula for companies such as Disney, Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic, Weta Workshop, EA Games and Blizzard Entertainment. He has overseen the production of over 80 DVDs and is responsible for Gnomon Workshop Live, a twice-yearly, internationally recognized educational summit. In 2009, Bourbeau joined Gnomon as the Director of Industry Relations and has since created, planned and organized hundreds of events on the Gnomon campus.
Lead Recruiter/Outreach Representative
As Lead Recruiter/Outreach, Mendoza travels to high schools, community colleges and trade shows to educate prospective students about Gnomonís training options and provide information about careers in the entertainment industry. He plays a pivotal role in developing and implementing strategic outreach and marketing campaigns and supervising junior level outreach representatives.
Mendoza received a certificate from Gnomon in 2009. He has over six years of experience as a compositor and 3D artist in the visual effects industry, providing him with a detailed knowledge base of industry practices that he applies to his position. In strict compliance with Gnomonís Mission, Jason has represented Gnomon at a variety of venues including industry trade shows, campus tours, high schools, colleges and career fairs. For over four years, he has set a strong example of ethical recruitment practices within the outreach department.
As Recruiter/Outreach, Anna travels to various high schools, colleges, and trade shows to introduce Gnomon as a training option for artists looking to develop their skills in visual effects and find a successful career within the entertainment industry. She led Gnomon's first high school internship where she mentored high school Art Academy students, providing them with hands on, real world working knowledge on the visual effects industry. Aside from an Outreach Representative, Anna acts as Gnomonís housing coordinator and assists students, both domestic and international, find appropriate accommodation.
Anna received her Bachelor of Art in Public Policy from the University of Michigan in 2009 and has a background working with youth in arts and education which aided her in developing an art therapy program at her previous employer. She continues her educational development by taking classes at Gnomon, and hones her creative abilities via photography.
